I would have loved to have been born a woman.

Except for the period, of course.

And also it would be a shit to be held suspicious when applying for a job just because I could want to get pregnant. Or to be considered less and paid less than my male colleagues for exactly the same job. Or to constantly have a Damocles sword over my head, to be below size 40. Or to be sexually harassed by my bosses, at the same time that society bombards me with incoherent messages ( “if you don’t want to have sex with men, you’re a bitch” + “if you happily have sex with men you’re an ever bigger bitch”).

Or to have less rights than men, to be possessed by men in many countries for religious or traditional reasons. Or to even be unable to enjoy sex for my life because someone thought it would make MY life better.

Yes, being a woman in 2014 is wonderful. Obviously we haven’t progressed enough, and we still need to use all the room we have to grow in that sense.

This is why today I wear proudly this T-shirt I love, with the bottom line of Sojourner Truth‘s most famous speech on women rights.

Musically, I don’t think there is a better song to depict this feelings as Nina Simone‘s Four Women:

Vale, y también sería una mierda que te cuestionaran sospechosamente en una entrevista de trabajo tan sólo por si me pudiera llegar a quedar embarazada. O que me consideraran y pagaran menos que a mis compañeros por exactamente el mismo trabajo. O tener constantemente la espada de Damocles sobre mí, para estar por debajo de la talla 40. O que me acosaran mis jefes al mismo tiempo que la sociedad me bombardease con mensajes incoherentes (“si no te acuestas con hombres, eres una zorra” + “si te acuestas con hombres cuando te apetece, eres más zorra aún”).

O tener menos derechos que los hombres, incluso ser posesión de los hombres en muchos países por razones religiosas o culturales. O incluso no poder disfrutar del sexo en mi vida porque a alguien se le ocurrió que eso sería mucho mejor para MÍ.

Sí, ser una mujer en 2014 es una maravilla. Resulta obvio que aún no hemos progresado lo suficiente, y que debemos hacer el esfuerzo por crecer todo lo posible en este sentido.

Es por ello que hoy llevo puesta esta camiseta que me encanta, con el título (¿Acaso no soy yo una mujer?) del discurso más famoso de la feminista afroamericana Sojourner Truth.

Musicalmente, no creo que haya canción mejor que las Four Women de Nina Simone para ilustrarlo.
