HIV. The AIDS agent. Evil. Death. Fear and rejection. This is the perception of most population about this tiny organism – and it is alright as long as it involves the organism and not the PERSON who carries it, someone who deserves just as much respect as anyone else. But this feeling could change from today on, since a big discovery has been done:

HIV can help cure genetic diseases.

What? Are you saying that some children are being injected with HIV to get rid of other illnesses? NO. It doesn’t work like that. The virus helps spreading the genetic mutation to the stem cells outside the child’s body, and then, the uninfected stem cells are injected in the child’s blood stream, slowly fixing the disease. So far it didn’t work with other viruses, but the infectivity of HIV seems to be just perfect for this treatment…

I always thought that all beings in the world had a reason to exist: mosquitos pollinate flowers and are lizards’ meals, further to wake me up on summer nights for instance. So this may be HIV’s reason, its utility for the common good. Until we find a cure for it, let’s congratulate in being able to use it to cure these diseases!

VIH. El causante del SIDA. El mal. La muerte. Miedo y rechazo. Esta es la percepción de la mayor parte de la población sobre este pequeño organismo (y es una percepción que está bien siempre que se centre en el organismo y no en la PERSONA que lo porta, ya que esa persona merece el mismo respeto que cualquier otra). Pero este sentimiento puede cambiar desde hoy mismo, ya que se ha hecho un gran descubrimiento:

El VIH puede ayudar a curar enfermedades genéticas.

¿Qué? ¿Me estás diciendo que cogen a unos niños y les inyectan el VIH para curarles otras enfermedades? NO. No funciona así. El virus ayuda a contagiar la mutación genética en las células madre fuera del cuerpo del niño; después, las células madre sanas se inyectan en el torrente sanguíneo de los niños y van curando poco a poco la enfermedad. Hasta ahora no había funcionado con otros virus, pero la infecciosidad del VIH parece perfecta para este tratamiento…

Siempre he pensado que todos los seres del mundo tienen una razón para existir: los mosquitos polinizan las flores y sirven de alimento para las lagartijas, por ejemplo, aparte de despertarme por las noches en verano. Y puede que esta sea la razón del VIH, su utilidad para el bien común. Hasta que encontremos una cura para él, alegrémonos de poder usarlo para curar otras enfermedades!
